  6. The Nordic Championship, played in Ostersund, Sweden from 27
  7. July through 7 August, was also considered to be a FIDE Zonal
  8. qualifying tournament for the Nordic region. Given the number
  9. of strong players present in Iceland and the Scandinavian
  10. countries, it was hardly surprising that the event was a
  11. dogfight to the very end.

  13. Despite the absence of two of the region's top stars, Curt
  14. Hansen from Denmark (billed as the next Bent Larsen), and
  15. Sweden's perennial candidate, Ulf Anderssen, there was still
  16. plenty of talent on hand. In fact, the two slots in a future
  17. Interzonals were still up in the air during the last round.

  19. The eventual winner was the defending Nordic Champion and the
  20. tournament's highest rated player, GM Simen Agdestein from
  21. Norway. His 5 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss for a 6.5 out of 9
  22. score proved good enough for clear first, one-half point
  23. better than Sweden's GM Ferdinand Hellers and Iceland's
  24. highest rated player (and one time World Championship
  25. Candidate), Johann Hjartarson. Both finished undefeated and
  26. will fight it out in a playoff for the second Interzonal
  27. position.

  29. Of the remaining 15 entrants, probably the most disappointing
  30. results were achieved by the Great Dane himself, Bent Larsen,
  31. who finished in 14th place and Jonny Hector, Sweden's newest
  32. GM, who's had a good year on the tournament circuit despite a
  33. 16th place finish here.

  35. Hjartarson's win while three pawns down against the Swedish
  36. GM Ernst typified the competitive spirit exhibited by most of
  37. the participants in the event.
